POWYS sides at last week’s Ann Smart National Schools Netball Championship have received plaudits.

Welshpool High School under 18s represented the region in the Presidents’ Cup while Newtown under 16s were also in action in Swansea.

Newtown Netball Club’s Lisa Trigg joined the schools in praising the performance of the sides.

“Both teams were outstanding,” said Trigg. “It was a very tough competition with many Welsh players playing for their school teams.

“Both teams rose to the challenge and the experience and made their teachers very proud.”

Netball is currently a sport on the grow in Powys with more than 160 children currently members of the Welshpool and Newtown clubs while a regional side has also improved year on year since its founding in 2015 and now regular competes against other regions.

Meanwhile Newtown Stars edged closer to promotion in the Shrewsbury Netball League with centre Tayla Trigg and shooter Kate Hughes playing key roles in a 38-17 win over Jaguars.
