MALDWYN Leisure Centre in Newtown hosted the Powys Girls Netball Championship last month.

More than 120 players represented sides at under 14 and under 16 level with a high level of competition throughout the day.

Netball continues to thrive in the county with Newtown currently represented by two successful sides in the Shrewsbury Netball League.

Meanwhile continued strides at county level over the last few years has led to improved fortunes at national level with the region’s representative sides thriving at junior level.

Some of the stars of the future took to the court in Newtown with Maldwyn Robins beating Newtown Gems to claim the under 14s title while Newtown Diamonds won the under 16s honours with Builth Wells runners-up.

Both sides now progress to the Welsh Clubs Finals in Bangor in May.

Organiser Lisa Trigg said: “Netball in North Powys is thriving with excellent links to schools.

“Welshpool and Newtown High Schools will both represent the region at the Welsh Schools Final this month.

“I am so proud to have been part in this growing netball journey and hope it will continue for many years.”
