NEWTOWN’S Dolerw Park hosted the annual Machynlleth/Llanidloes and Newtown cluster primary school cross country this week.

The venue has become the home of schools cross country in the region.

Hundreds of young athletes from across the three areas descended on the town’s iconic park to represent their schools.

Organiser Jonny Roberts said: “We had a great day down at Dolerw for the Machynlleth / Llanidloes / Newtown cluster primary school cross country.

“Also a big thank you to Maldwyn Harriers and Welsh Athletics for assisting us on the day.

“The children all performed to a very high standard and the races were highly competitive and exciting.”

Among the winners were Neve Curley of Ysgol Bro Hyddgen and Ysgol Dyffryn Trannon’s Llewellyn Turner who won the Year 3 races while Megan Jones of Tregynon’sYsgol Rhiwbechan won the Year 3 girls race.

Meanwhile Maddie Hughes of Llanidloes and Lewis Hamer of Newtown’s Dafydd Llwyd won the Year 5 races to cap a fine day’s racing.
