NEWTOWN Rugby Club hope to boost their spectator facilities next season.

The Recreation Ground club has long been one of the power houses of Mid Wales rugby and is currently among the promotion contenders in division two of the North Wales League.

However the club has long lagged behind its county rivals COBRA, Llanidloes and Welshpool in terms of spectator facilities.

The club has now pressed ahead with a planning application to Powys County Council with the aim of erecting covered standing provision at the Recreation Ground.

Club spokesman Mark Lloyd said: “The planning application is for a covered standing area overlooking the first team pitch. This has not yet been determined by Powys County Council.”
