LLANDRINDOD Wells would be the perfect location for a new 3G sports facility.

The call was made by Katie Christopher, a product of Llandrindod Wells Football Club’s junior girls set-up and currently goalkeeper for English Women’s League side Cheltenham Town.

Christopher insisted the lack of 3G facilities in Powys compared to every other region of Wales had long become the biggest problem facing the women’s as well as the men’s game.

Currently one quarter of Wales is served by just one 3G facility at Newtown Football Club’s Latham Park.

Despite a lack of investment in facilities from national sporting bodies like the Football Association of Wales (FAW), Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) and Welsh Hockey Union (WHU) the county continues to produce athletes and sports stars.

Christopher has been joined by fellow Llandrindod Wells product Amelia Forkings in forging a football career with the teenager currently on the books at Shrewsbury Town and its under 16s side.

Christopher insisted Llandrindod Wells would be an ideal location for a new 3G facility in Powys.

“The biggest problem for female football in Powys is the lack of facilities,” said Christopher.

“It’s all great Newtown having a 3G but unfortunately it’s no use to anyone south of the county.

“Llandrindod is so central it would work perfectly for everyone around.”

Christopher reflected on her own junior career when the lack of facilities had been a major issue in Llandrindod Wells and continues to undermine the efforts of the town club to develop its junior section to this day.

“Having coached at Llandrindod Wells Junior Girls for numerous years and having played for them previously, I know the struggles of not being able to use the pitch because it had to be kept in top condition for the men’s game,” said Christopher.

“We were not able to train on it during winter months because it would be too waterlogged and having to use the town’s astro turf pitch at the leisure centre.

“If there was a 3G pitch in Radnorshire we would not have these issues.”

Christopher insisted the only way the women’s game would develop in Powys was increased investment in facilities and a 3G pitch in Llandrindod Wells was vital for any hopes of increased participation.

“Even if some more girls set-ups are founded in Radnorshire or Brecknock the Powys Girls League is only able to use Newtown’s 3G pitch for tournaments so the travel would be too much for South Powys clubs.

“A 3G pitch in Llandrindod, which is central for all Powys, would increase participation.”
