Llanrhaeadr 0 Holyhead Hotspur 1
LLANRHAEADR suffered late heartache as Mel McGuiness’ injury time winner left the home side stunned and Holyhead triumphant.
Illness and suspension hit the home side who went into the game against the basement side with a threadbare squad.
Spurs looked to capitalise with dangerman McGuiness testing home goalkeeper Jimmy Hayns before Llanrhaeadr threatened themselves with Joe Vaughan’s surging run and cross narrowly drifting wide.
Player-manager Marc Griffiths was denied by a shot preventing tackle from Dan McGuiness before brother Mel handed the villagers another reminder of his threat by rocking the post from the edge of the area.
Both sides could have led before the break with Iain Edmunds’ corner cleared off the line by Alex Jones while at the other end Hayns was again called into action to deny John Littlemore and Luke McGiven.
Llanrhaeadr should have led early in the second-half only for Griffiths’ shot from Khyam Wytton’s cross to be superbly tipped away by goalkeeper Carl Jones.
Moments later Matthew Evans released Wytton who failed to capitalise as Spurs survived a scare.
Llanrhaeadr continued to look the most likely to make the breakthrough with Griffiths and Matt Evans firing wide before Spurs were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the area deep into stoppage time.
Up stepped McGuiness to fire home and snatch glory and revive their survival bid while leaving a stunned Llanrhaeadr deflated.
LLANRHAEADR: Hayns, M Evans, Kelly, G Evans, Bailey, Vaughan, Edmunds, Green, Weaver, Griffiths, Wytton. Subs: Graham, Lee
