POWYS County Council will not be organising the Montgomeryshire Sports Awards this year.
The announcement leaves the future of the much loved annual showpiece and celebration of Montgomeryshire sport in doubt.
Since its inception the event has grown in stature and for the past decade hosted at Newtown’s Hafren theatre to large audiences with stars like Welsh international athletes Andy Davies, Adele Nicoll and Lauren Williams among the past winners.
The event has also highlighted new sports stars with expanded junior awards while decorating clubs, coaches and volunteers for their role in Montgomeryshire sporting success.
A spokesperson for Powys County Council confirmed the authority’s decision to cease its involvement in the awards, saying “The council will not be organising the Montgomeryshire Sports Awards due to the budgetary pressures that it faces.”
