Aberystwyth Town 0 Newtown 2
NEWTOWN boosted their top six bid with derby glory at Aberystwyth Town.
Nick Rushton tested home goalkeeper Terry McCormick early on as Newtown began brightly while the Seasiders had to wait until the 26th minute for their first opening with Matthew Jones’ free-kick parried by goalkeeper David Jones.
Newtown broke the deadlock on 37 minutes with Steve Leslie slotting home a penalty after Ryan Woolacott brought down Callum Roberts in the area.
The Seasiders looked to get back in the game after the break with Ashley Ruane’s cross steered over the bar by Ryan Edwards before Newtown doubled their lead on the hour with Rushton firing beyond McCormick from 12 yards.
Aberystwyth almost got back in the game when Ruane headed Jones’ cross wide and moments later Geoff Kellaway fired onto the post but Newtown held firm.
NEWTOWN D Jones, Roberts, Mills-Evans, Denny, Mitchell, Rushton, Boundford, Leslie, Kenton, Phillips, Fletcher. Subs: Cook, Perry, E Jones
