MADDIE Griffiths has been crowned Welsh inter regional cross country under 13s girls champion.

Griffiths was joined on the podium by fellow Welshpool High School student and Maldwyn Harriers Athletics Club star Callum Morgan who claimed silver in the under 13s boys race to complete a memorable weekend for the up and coming athletes.

Both followed in the footsteps of former Welshpool High School student and current Welsh Commonwealth star Andy Davies in making their mark in national cross country events.

The annual Welsh inter regional cross country championships took place in Llandrindod Wells at a new venue adjacent to Trefonnen School and served as a trial for athletes aiming to make the cut for national team selection.

Griffiths claimed gold in 8.48 to be crowned Welsh under 13s champion while Morgan’s time of 8.09 was second only to Brecon Athletic Club star Jack Organ in 8.01.

Fellow Harrier Aled Breeze was also in action with a time of 8.18 securing ninth place in the under 13s boys race.

Newtown High School’s Oliver Jones claimed fifth place in the under 15s boys with a time of 15.39 with fellow Harrier Deiniol Owen ending 14th in 16.13.
