NEWTOWN Cricket Club hosted its end of season awards night with president Alan Jarman making the presentations.

Tom Foulkes won the first team’s top batsman award while Tom Anderson marked a superb debut season for the club with both top bowler and player of the season accolades.

Meanwhile the long serving Dicky Smout won the second team top batsman award for 2018.

Elsewhere Montgomery Cricket Club will be captained by Sam Williams for a third consecutive season in 2019 with David Jones taking charge of the Lymore club’s second string.

Shropshire League restructuring looks set to place Montgomery in the second division with the reserves entering the newly formed division six.

Williams said: “Had we scored the number of points we did in any other division we would have won the league but in fairness to Ellesmere they beat us twice and deserved the title and that will only drive us on to go even better next season.

“I expect us to keep our squad together and I believe we have the players and the strength in depth to challenge for promotion.”

All-rounder Aaron Ruff-Cock will once again serve as vice-captain.

Meanwhile with George Corfield stepping down as captain of the second team, David Jones will lead the team’s own promotion push from division six.

Jones said: “t’s an honour to be made captain, and to take over from George who has done a tremendous job over the past few years.

“Last season we were a victim of our own success and ended up playing in a division that was too strong for us but we learnt a lot and I would hope we will start 2019 a better side for the experience.”

Jones’ brother Richard will also provide solid support as the second team vice-captain.
