It WAS a successful weekend for several Oswestry-based boxers fighting out of Maelor Amateur Boxing Club.

Three of the club’s boxers were competing across the UK, fighting in various competitions and tournaments.

Youngster Gary Richards boxed for the boys and girls club of Wales in the 66kg class.

Gary, from St Martins, travelled with his coach to Port Talbot to face Luke Conner of Chepstow.

The trip was made worthwhile with Gary winning on all three of the judges’ scorecards.

He will now travel to Bristol on Sunday, where he will join Harry Roberts, also of St Martins, to box in the British Championship quarter-finals.

Ethan Finney of Oswestry was also boxing on Saturday, when he travelled to Caernarfon for his bout with Dion Roberts.

Ethan also came home with a win after beating his opponent on points.

Another club member competed in his third international bout on Saturday.

Cory Jones of Rhosllanerchrugog beat English champion David Adams from Middlesbrough, who previously boasted a record of 13 wins from 13 contests.
