Llanfair United 1

Porthmadog 4

LLANFAIR United’s JD Welsh Cup dreams came to an end at the hands of a class Porthmadog at Mount Field.

United enjoyed a memorable league victory over the North Wales side at the same venue during their Huws Gray Alliance days and Porthmadog.

A lively opening saw Karl Seliaerts fire over and Toby Evans force goalkeeper Paul Pritchard into action before Porthmadog led on eight minutes after Sion Edwards was impeded in the area and Shaun Cavanagh converted from the spot.

Home goalkeeper Mark Richards was kept busy to deny Iwan Lewis and Cavanagh who was denied by the woodwork late in the half after heading a deep cross from Edwards onto the bar.

The pressure told with Jay Gibbs doubling the visitors lead after linking with Edwards down the left wing.

However it was United who ended the half on top with Nathan Edgington forcing Pritchard into action before Seliaerts struck the post.

United carried the momentum into the second-half and were back in the game when Alun Hughes headed home a long throw.

United rallied with Evans denied by the offside flag while Paul Griffiths spooned over from 12 yards while at the other end Richards pulled off a smart save to deny Lewis.

Porthmadog snatched an all important on the break with 12 minutes remaining with Edwards rounding Richards to slot into an empty net.

Edwards crossed for substitute Dan Dascalu to blast home and settle tie six minutes later.

Richards denied Gibbs a second while Evans was frustrated by Pritchard at the other end as United bowed out with their heads held high.
