TNS were knocked off the top of the JD Welsh Premier following a 1-0 defeat at Aberystwyth Town on Friday night.

The Seasiders had failed to beat their Mid Wales rivals at home in 11 years but threatened early on with Rio Ahmadi denied by the bar from Wes Baynes' right wing cross.

Home goalkeeper Terry McCormick was kept on his toes to deny Greg Draper and Jamie Mullan while Jon Routledge also fired wide.

However the home side continued to pose a threat with Matthew Jones' free-kick forcing goalkeeper Paul Harrison into action before Joe Phillips looked to have broke the deadlock only to be ruled offside to the chagrin of the home faithful.

The Seasiders opened the scoring seven minutes into the second-half with Jones swinging over a right wing cross for Lee Jenkins to fire home.

TNS rallied with Chris Seargeant and Ryan Brobbel going close while the hosts threatened to extend their lead with Phillips curling inches wide.

McCormick denied Brobbel with 10 minutes remaining in the Saints final chance as the home side held firm for shock win.

Craig Williams struck the woodwork as Newtown threatened only to be stung at the other end on 32 minutes with ex-Llanfair United striker James Davies slotting under goalkeeper Dave Jones.

Moments later Davies broke through the Newtown defence again only to lift his shot over the bar under pressure from Jones.

Newtown started the second-half with greater urgency with Mitchell twice going close before being awarded a penalty only for Alex Fletcher to crash his spot kick onto the bar.

Jones kept Newtown in the game at the other end with a great block to deny Davies who continued to be Druids' dangerman.

However with seconds remaining the Robins snatched a point with Mitchell crossing for Boundford to head home and secure his side a deserved point.
