Cambrian Clydach 1 Newtown 1

NEWTOWN were the victims of a Nathaniel MG Cup upset at the hands of South Wales League One side Cambrian Clydach in midweek.

Manager Chris Hughes made wholesale changes which almost bore fruit as early as the 12th minute led when Sam Phillips’ long distance effort struck the post.

Phillips continued to probe the home defence while Joe Kenton and Steve Leslie spurned several openings.

The hosts started the second-half brightly with Corey Shephard forcing goalkeeper Jack Perry into a finger tip save.

Phillips tested goalkeeper Dan Bradley at the other end while Kieran Mills-Evans headed over as Newtown sought to break the hosts stubborn resolve.

However with 15 minutes remaining the Robins were punished when Shepherd fired home to send the Tonypandy club into the semi-finals.

NEWTOWN: Perry, Williams, Cook, Goodwin (Denny 80), Mills-Evans, Bailey, Fletcher, Phillips, Leslie (Mitchell 62), Rushton, Kenton (Boundford 62). Subs: Jones, Evans.
