NEWTOWN kept the JD Welsh Premier title race wide open with a battling 1-1 draw at home to leaders TNS on Saturday.

Ethan Jones gave Newtown an early lead and the Robins held onto their lead under mounting pressure until 15 minutes from time when Greg Draper slotted home from the penalty spot after being fouled in the area.

The match ended on a sour note for TNS with Jon Routledge dismissed for picking up a stupid second caution after needlessly kicking the ball away in injury-time.

With Barry Town United beating Bala Town and Connahs Quay Nomads held to a goalless draw at Caernarfon Town the top of the Welsh Premier remains tight with six points separating the top five sides.

Meanwhile Guilsfield threw away a two goal lead in a 2-2 draw at Holywell Town in the Huws Gray Alliance.

Sam Litchfield and Steve Blenkinsop goals gave the Guils the lead only for Steve Lewis and Shaun Tuck replies to save the hosts a point.

Elsewhere goals from Mike Williams and Jordan Phillips earned Bangor City a 2-0 win at Penrhyncoch.

Meanwhile Llanfair United hit back to overcome Caersws and prevail 3-1 winners in the third round of the Welsh Trophy.

Aled Jones gave the Bluebirds the lead only for Karl Seliaerts to strike twice and ensure United's name in the hat for the next round.

Bow Street battled to a 2-1 win at Churchstoke who replied through debutant Reece Benson while Llanidloes Town's run ended with a 1-0 win at Ynystawe.

Berriew also progressed with goals from Joe Haycock and Ismael Ozdemir settling a 2-0 win at Carno.
