Conwy Borough 4 Llanrhaeadr 0

LLANRHAEADR’S league cup campaign ended at the first hurdle at fellow Huws Gray Alliance new boys Conwy Borough.

The villagers contained the hosts until five minutes before the break when star man Corrig McGonigle raced onto Dean Seager’s incisive throughball to slot past debutant goalkeeper Jimmy Haynes.

The remainder of the half proved a tight affair as last season’s Welsh Alliance and Mid Wales League champions cancelled each other out.

Llanrhaeadr started the second-half on top with Glenn Evans’ header smothered by goalkeeper Keighan Jones.

However on 53 minutes the Tangerines doubled their lead with Seager once again releasing McGonigle to complete his brace and leave the villagers with a mountain to climb.

McGonigle continued to impress with his free-kick coming back off the woodwork on the hour as Llanrhaeadr hurried clear the loose ball.

However McGonigle completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot following an off the ball incident to put the tie to bed.

Conwy completed a comfortable afternoon on 78 minutes with Connor Tierney and Luke Wandless linking to set up Cory Williams to net.

Llanrhaeadr could have reduced the arrears at the death with Joe Vaughan releasing Iwan Matthews who scuffed wide as the villagers were left to focus on the league.

Player manager Marc Griffiths said: “Saturday can’t come soon enough for us, we are all disappointed with the results this month and we’re keen to put things right, starting this Saturday.”
