NEWTOWN were crowned Montgomeryshire County T20 champions on Sunday.

Newtown hosted the annual showpiece with local rivals Llanidloes, Welshpool and Montgomery completing the finals day line-up at the Recreation Ground.

In the first game, Llanidloes took on Newtown and were bowled out for 45 runs with only Wil Denham making double figures with 16 with Bryant Galpin (4-9), Danny Foulkes (3-3) and David Anthony (2-4) dominating for the hosts.

Newtown knocked the runs off in 6.4 overs with Matt Knight scoring 35 in reply.

The second semi-final between Welshpool and Montgomery was a closely contested affair with Welshpool led to 144-5 to defend by Paul Chapman with a top scoring with 57.

However Montgomery chased the total down in 17.5 overs with Aaron Ruff-Cock scoring a sensational 107 not out to book a place in the final.

The final turned out to be a one sided affair with Montgomery skittled for 18 with their order unable to cope with Newtown’s opening bowlers with Tom Anderson (3-5) and man of the match David Anthony (4-3) in uncompromising mood.

Newtown reached their target in 2.3 overs in reply with skipper John Anthony 12 not out to receive the county T20 trophy from sponsor Nick Evans of Evabuild.
