LAKESIDE Golf Club achieved another milestone in its short history with victory in the regional final of the SkyCaddie PGA Pro-Captain Challenge.

Captain Steve Owen (14) was joined by PGA professional Grant Edwards in representing the Garthmyl club in the North West qualifying round final at Dunham Forest Golf Club in Altrincham against 51 other qualifiers from across Wales, England and Scotland.

Owen and Edwards combined for 45 points, capped by three successive birdies on the final three holes from Edwards, to take the trophy.

The duo’s reward is a place in the finals to be held in Mallorca’s Arabella Golf complex over two days from November 6-7.

Edwards said: “Neither of us expected to be heading for Spain.

“We were both really up for it. It’s the first time the club has entered, and the pairing dovetailed well in a pretty good debut in the competition.

Owen added: “We were hoping for a good day but it went much better than expected.”

The achievement puts Lakeside firmly on the golfing map ahead of its 10th year anniversary which will be celebrated in 2019.

The club recently opened new tees to effectively turn their Garthmyl home into an 18 hole course.
