NEWTOWN’ S Buck Inn hosted the final of the Newtown Summer Pool League competition.

The doubles cup final, sponsored by the Buck, saw Carl Guntrip and Dave Woosnam overcome Steven Jones and Alan Jones 3-2 in a closely fought final.

The venue also hosted the final of the Graham Ottaway Builders Ltd Singles Cup with its 64 entries hailing from a host of local leagues while also attracting international standard players.

All 64 players were drawn into eight groups of eight with the top two progressing in the main competition while the third and fourth placed finishers qualified for the Plate.

Of the local youth emerging from their groups Josh Owen, Jake Ottaway, Luke Mumford, Carl Hanson and Matt Davies excelled and eliminated senior players.

However the more senior players shone in the Plate with only Owen left flying the flag by virtue of a last frame decider over Jamie Mayers.

Glyn Davies met Mike Williams in the final with a large crowd watching two of the area’s top players from the past three decades go head to head with Davies easing to a 5-1 win.

International players started to fall at the quarter-final of the main cup with Ed Lewis, Matt Davies and Luke Mumford tumbling out.

Playing in his first summer event, Carl Clark, brought quality and experience to beat Rich Evans 5-4 in their semi-final.

Meanwhile Drew Hughes had his own battle with Carl Guntrip in their semi final with the latter spurning a golden chance to establish a two frame advantage as Hughes recovered to win 5-3.

Hughes started the final well and opened a two frame lead before Clark hit back to level.

Clark failed to pot a difficult last ball in the fifth frame which Hughes ruthlessly capitalised to proceed to win 5-2 and retain his cup.
