TWO of the region’s leading athletes have celebrated success.

Last week Welshpool shot put star Adele Nicoll claimed a silver medal while on Welsh duty in the Manchester International.

A distance of 14.79m ensured Nicoll a place on the podium in dire conditions.

“The weather was awful probably some of the worst I have ever competed in,” said Nicoll. “We had no shelter so I was soaked through.

“Trying to rotate with shoes designed to make you go faster on a very slippy circle and pouring down rain was challenging to say the least but I did what I needed to and I got good points for the team.”

Meanwhile Andy Davies has been selected to represent Wales at the Commonwealth Half Marathon Championships in Cardiff.

The Newtown long distance running star said: “I am really excited to get the call up for the Welsh team.

“It will be a huge honour to represent Wales again, especially on home soil.

“The team is really strong so looking forward to see what we can do.

“I set a new personal best at the Cardiff Half Marathon a few years ago so I know it’s a really fast course.

“I’m hoping to get somewhere near that time of 65:18. If it’s a nice day with no wind and home support, then who knows what can happen.”
