NEWTOWN’S summer strengthening has begun with the signing of two players.

Midfielder Damian Allen joins the Robins from JD Welsh Premier rivals Aberystwyth Town while defender Callum Roberts also agreed terms this week.

Allen arrives with 154 top flight appearances during a six season stint with Bangor City before switching to Aberystwyth in January while Roberts returns on a permanent deal following a successful loan from Shrewsbury Town last season.

Manager Chris Hughes was delighted to add both youth and experience to his ranks with 19 year old Roberts also adding to the local nucleus at Latham Park.

Hughes said: “We were impressed with what Robbo did last season and was very good when he came in from Shrewsbury.”

Meanwhile Hughes was delighted to finally be able to bring Allen to Latham Park having targeted the 31 year old midfielder for several seasons.

“Damien has had a good career and brings with him a wealth of experience both in England and the Welsh Premier,” said Hughes. “Technically he is a really good player and will bring a lot of qualities to the club.

“We’re delighted to get the deal done and look forward to working with him.”

The Robins return for pre-season training on Saturday with Hughes expected to further strengthen in coming weeks.
