More than a quarter of young people in Scotland believe that people in their community do not care about them, according to a new report.

The research by The Prince’s Trust and HSBC UK found that young people north of the border feel disconnected from their communities.

The Futures At Stake study measured a young person’s “stake in society” through factors such as the degree to which they feel people in their community care about them, and whether they feel they can make an impact on their community.

Researchers found that almost a fifth (16%) of young people in Scotland do not believe their actions have an impact in their community.

When asked about positive influences, more than a third of them (39%) said they do not believe they have positive role models in their community.

However, the overall stake in society score for young people in Scotland is 63, higher than the UK score of 61.

Kate Still, director of The Prince’s Trust Scotland, said: “Our research shows that young people are disconnected from their communities in early adulthood, at exactly the point when they should be more connected.

“We make it our mission at The Prince’s Trust to continually raise the aspirations of young people and connect them to positive role models to help them achieve in life. We need young people to know that they are valued and that their actions matter.

“At The Prince’s Trust we are relentlessly practical and positive about how we can turn young people’s lives around, so they have the chance to succeed.

“To help achieve this we have just launched UK2030, a taskforce that aims to increase opportunities for young people to support them to live, learn and earn.

“Our vision is that by 2030, we live in a country that puts the needs of young people first, so that every young person can achieve success for themselves and our country.”

The research, carried out by YouGov, questioned 3,120 people aged 11-30, including 241 in Scotland, in August and September this year.

Ian Stuart, chief executive of HSBC UK, said: “Every young person deserves the same chance of being connected to job opportunities regardless of where they live or their background.

“Positive role models are a key factor in raising aspirations and giving young people the chance to reach their full potential in their careers.

“We’re committed to supporting young people and have been working with The Prince’s Trust since 2012 to help over 33,000 young people get into work, training or education.”
