FREDDIE Roberts has set his sights on becoming the next star to emerge from the Hafren Cycling Club stable.

The nine-year-old from Welshpool ended last season as the West Midlands Cylocross League champion and Welsh U10s Cyclocross Championship winner.

The youngster has been a member of the Newtown and Welshpool-based club since he was five years old where it soon became clear he enjoyed competitive racing.

Since he has competed all over the country across all discipline, including road, cyclocross and mountain bike events.

The West Midlands Cyclocross League began in September and finished in January with races most weekends.

Freddie’s commitment was rewarded by winning the West Midlands Cyclocross League.

This season also saw Freddie travelling down to Pembrey County Park in Llanelli to compete in the Welsh Cyclocross Championship.

Freddie had trained hard for this race as he knew the competition would be tough.

He worked incredibly hard to maintain his lead to secure the Welsh U10 Cyclocross Championship.

Proud father James said: “He was absolutely over the moon to win the medal and is proud to be a Welsh lad representing Wales in a sport he loves.

He will now have some rest before he starts his preparations for the road and mountain bike season which will see him travelling all over Wales and England.

As soon as Freddie is 10, he will also start to gain some experience with indoor track cycling inspired by and following in the footsteps of his old Hafren CC teammate Fred Meredith.

The aim of the club is to deliver enjoyable, inclusive and progressive cycle skills training, together with structured coaching activities for children of all ages and abilities in a safe, traffic-free environment.

Sessions are held at Welshpool Church in Wales School on Salop Road.
