Two Powys dancers who won top prizes at this year's Eisteddfod T have qualified to represent Wales in an international competition.

Betsy Mills-Hogg, a pupil at Welshpool Church in Wales Primary School, and Llanidloes High School student Layla Jones scooped first place for their solo dances at the virtual festival earlier this month.

The girls are members of the Shelley Ann Choreography dance company in Newtown, which has qualified to represent Wales at this summer's Dance World Cup in Telford.

Dance tutor Shelley praised the talented duo on their "wonderful" performances at Wales' largest competitions for young people, adding that the dance company's World Cup qualifying success was "another amazing achievement".

She said: “Layla and Betsy work so hard and are fully committed to their dance, they have an amazing future ahead of them and I am very proud of their achievements."

Children and young people from across the county competed in this year’s virtual Eisteddfod T festival. More than 13,000 competitors in Wales took part which organisers Urdd said was a “resounding success”.

Interviewed live on S4C, other winners from Powys include Evan Hopkins (Llansantffraid Primary School) for his solo recitation for Welsh learners; Sophie Jones (Brecon and Radnorshire) for her Welsh solo song; Heledd a Teleri (Bro Hafren) for their 2D picture; and finally, a double win for Gwenlli Pennant Jones (Ysgol Gynradd Llanbrynmair) for her beauty tutorial and Welsh idiom.
