A Powys man stole money from his grandmother to fund a drugs habit, a court heard.

William Mark Windsor, of Troed y Rhiw, Meifod, pleaded guilty to three charges of committing fraud, by using his grandmother's bank card to access her account on February 11,12 and 17, withdrawing a total of £800.

He was imprisoned for 14 weeks for each charge.

The court heart how Windsor, aged 34, was caught on CCTV making the withdrawals and later admitted the offence under caution.

Prosecuting, Mr Justin Espie said: "The victim in this case is the defendant's grandmother. She discovered on the 17th of February that £200, £300 and £300 had been withdrawn from her bank account.

"These had been taken from a cash machine without her permission and the defendant was identified by CCTV footage.

"In fairness to him, he admitted the offence in the interview."

Representing Windsor, Mr Paul Inns said in mitigation that the defendant, who was currently serving a 20 week custodial sentence at HMP Berwyn for an earlier breach of a community order for an unrelated offence, had shown a "marked improvement" in his attitude since he was no longer taking drugs in prison.

"The background to this is that sadly Mr Windsor has a very significant issue with substance misuse and the proceeds were used to purchase drugs.

"It appears that he had used the card previously when shopping, with her consent."

Mr Inns added that his client had been willing to engage in rehabilitation programmes while serving his current sentence, but that none were available due to the pandemic.

Sentencing, Magistrates took a dim view of Windsor's offences, imposing a custodial sentence on the ground that a "serious abuse of trust" had taken place.

"We have listened to the evidence today and we pare particularly troubled that your offence was a serious abuse of trust of your grandmother, a vulnerable person, and that this took place on three occasions," they said.

Magistrates imposed a custodial sentence of 14 weeks for each offence, to run concurrently. The sentence was imposed to run consecutively to the defendant's current prison sentence, starting from June 15.

The defendant's grandmother was also awarded £800 in compensation.
