NEWTOWN Cricket Club is mourning the loss of a second club legend within a month.

Former player, secretary and treasurer John Hester passed away earlier this month and the Recreation Ground club announced the passing of groundsman and supporter David Davies during the weekend.

Chairman Paul Hawthorn said: "John has been a huge part of Newtown Cricket Club as a player, secretary, treasurer for over 40 years to my knowledge.

"The last few years, in his capacity as an accountant, he audited the club accounts for us, wouldn’t take payment and would only accept a donation for his chosen charity as Chair of Trustees and Wales regional co-ordinator of fightbladdercancer.co.uk.

OTHER NEWS:

"John was a tremendously professional and knowledgeable man who always made time for you. Our sincere condolences go to Val and the family at this extremely difficult time."

County Times:

The club was also devastated to hear the news of the passing of David 'Ishy' Davies during the weekend.

Mr Davies was a well-known face at the cricket ground and as a steward at Newtown Football Club.

Mr Hawthorn added: "Ish has been an amazing servant to the cricket club for many years.

"He would be at the club seven days a week, always doing jobs that played a huge part in my opinion, of making the Rec be the best ground in the Shropshire League.

"The loss of his dedication to the club, dry sense of humour and wit will be sadly missed by all of us at Newtown Cricket Club Rest in peace Ish and thank you for everything."

Newtown Football Club also paid tribute.

A spokesman said: "Ishy has been at the club for over 60 years, first playing for the club's youth team before spending over 50 years as a volunteer."
