IF ANYONE in Newtown was in any doubt about the pending World Cup they need only venture to Market Street today.

For today a mural of Wales defender Connor Roberts has been unveiled next to Charlies Stores.

The giant mural of the Neath born Burnley defender forms part of a nationwide series which has also seen Gareth Bale, Harry Wilson, Joe Allen, Joe Rodon and Rhys Norrington-Davies immortalised on buildings around of the country.

The project is being delivered by Mentrau Iaith Cymru, a national organisation that supports a network of 22 local Welsh language initiatives, Mentrau Iaith, across Wales.

Rhys Norrington-Davies' depiction can be spotted in Bow Street, where he played at youth level but the Sheffield United defender will miss Wales' first World Cup since 1958 through injury.

Daniela Schlick, Project Coordinator with Mentrau Iaith Cymru, said: "A small committee came together to discuss ideas on how to celebrate the success of the Welsh football team and the series of murals was very obvious to us - literally.

"Our aim is to convey the spirit of the team and the Welsh on the murals. Most importantly we are keen to reach the communities of Wales so they can be part of the celebrations and be able to keep something in our communities that continues.

"The murals are deliberately in locations close to the communities. We are celebrating the Welsh team, our language and our culture by welcoming everyone from everywhere to celebrate with us."
