BEN Higgins wrapped-up the 2022 Legends Cars Championship with MRF Tyres 'Rookie' title at a rain-lashed Brands Hatch Indy Circuit on Sunday.

The Abermule youngster went into the event with a lead of 125 points at the top of the Rookie standings.

The points lead see-sawed throughout the event's six races between Higgins and chief rival Oli Schlup but Higgins ultimately claimed the title by a mere 30 points after an excellent top four overall result in the final race of the season.

Schlup claimed the Rookie class win in Heat One of round 14 on Saturday to close the gap and moved into the class points lead after winning again in Heat Two.

Higgins then hit back in the final, claiming his first class victory of the weekend and regaining the points lead.

OTHER NEWS:

On Sunday, Schlup again won the Rookie battle in both of the Heats and in doing so went into the round 15 Final with a lead of 125 points over Higgins.

With it all to do, Higgins produced a fantastic performance and actually led the race outright early on.

Although slipping to an eventual finish of fifth on the road after the re-start, points for fourth due to an unregistered 'guest' driver having won the race, it was enough for Higgins to seal the title when Schlup retired.

Higgins said: "It’s quite exciting to be honest to win the Rookie title.

"We weren’t really looking too good this weekend, we had quite a few issues, but we were there or thereabouts. It was so slippery in the wet, we’re on a road tyre and the cars are so light with quite a bit of power – but it just makes it fun.

"Legends isn’t an easy thing to come into, but we’ve loved it and hope we can do it again next year."
