THE girls football season in Powys kicked off on Sunday with the first of the new fortnightly festivals taking place at Berriew Football Club.
Paul Inns, Powys Girls Football chairperson, and head of coaching at Berriew, said: "Powys Girls Football have launched a new initiative this season, with girls football festivals taking place every fortnight or so at rotating venues – with Berriew, Llanidloes and Llandrindod Wells hosting the festivals."
The first festival took place this Sunday, with teams from Llandrindod Wells, Berriew, Llanidloes, Newtown Whitestars and Welshpool participating.
Inns added: "The hope is that by rotating the festivals we can encourage more girls to join in.
"Any girls can take part in the festivals, whether they are a member of a club or not – just turn up and you’ll be placed in a team."

The next few festivals are taking place as follows: Llandrindod Wells, September 26; Llanidloes, October 10.
Inns feels that the girls game in mid Wales is on an upwards curve.
He said: "There’s more women’s football on TV than ever before and with the likes of local players such as Carrie Jones and Maria Francis-Jones playing at the highest level for both club and country – what fantastic ambassadors for the game.
"Local clubs are doing there bit too. Welshpool have formed a ladies team, Berriew do not charge for the first season that you are at the club, so it gives girls the chance to try the game to see if they like it.
"Berriew are also able to provide girls only coaching from Year 4 right through to ladies. Already this season we have had 24 new girls players join us.
