NEWTOWN were made to fight all the way to secure a 17-12 win at Llanidloes in the WRU Bowl on Friday night.

Tries from Tom Andrew and Tom Parry were converted by Will Holloway who also added a penalty to ensure Town prevailed with Mason Jones kicking four penalties in reply.

Meanwhile COBRA maintained their bright start to the North Wales Women’s League season with an emphatic 121-0 victory at Wrexham.

Grace Manford and Ffion Williams shared the limelight with both crossing for five tries each while Cat Davies crossed for a hat-trick.

Further tries from Kirsty Walsh, Carra Higgins, Jess Andrews, Daisy Evans, Teleri Lloyd Evans and Jaya Whittingham completing the try count with the latter also adding 13 conversions.

This weekend sees COBRA cross the border to take on Bournville.

The Meifod-based club’s youth team also hit the try trail in a 63-15 win at Mold.

Tom Griffiths, Rob Irving and Aled Davies each crossed for two tries each with Hari Davies , Lewis Wilde and Iestyn Pryce also celebrating tries with Pryce enjoying a good day with the boot with nine conversions.

Meanwhile the club’s junior sides played Nant Conwy with the under 16s winning 66-10, the under 15s won 31-0 and under 12s prevailed 75-19.

The club’s under 10s were 65-35 winners while under 8s won 12-10.

Newtown’s development and youth sides were also in action.

Town’s development side scrapped out a 19-19 draw at Bro Gwernant in Llangollen while the club’s youth team fell just short in a 24-22 defeat at home to Wrexham.

Meanwhile the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has confirmed the division three north season will commence on September 18 but no relegation or promotion will take place following the impact of lockdown.
