Pupils at Penygloddfa School brought the Hay Festival to Newtown as part of an event celebrating books.

Children aged four to 11 took part in a programme of fun activities during a literacy festival week which ended on May 28.

The school was joined online by authors, made traditional Hay Festival letters, and took part in special reading sessions in bell tents on the school grounds.

Pupils were encouraged to dress as their favourite book character which ended with a celebration afternoon that included a visit from an ice cream van.

Emma Jones, teacher, said it was a "huge success by all the children".

A free digital bilingual Programme for Schools ran from May 24 to 28 for Key Stage Two pupils, mixing storytelling and live performances broadcast to schools all over the UK to inspire reading for pleasure.

Caroline Michel, Hay Festival chair, said: “This has been another extraordinary Hay Festival. To welcome the world's greatest authors, thinkers and world-changers back to Hay-on-Wye to appear live on our stages has been a triumph, not just for the Festival and the town, but for our audiences around the world. With increased engagement around our Programme for Schools and new partnerships, this is our most accessible yet. And if we can celebrate something wonderful in this challenging time, it has been the expansion of our Festival to a truly global event, with an audience spreading from the UK to book lovers across 135 countries.”
