Machynlleth Rugby Club hosted a special night with Welsh rugby legend Shane Williams last weekend.

Williams was joined by comedian John Martin for the Friday night event which had previously been cancelled twice due to pandemic restrictions.

Williams shared the story of his rugby career after not being given the opportunity to play the game at school where he had protected him due to being “too small”.

Once he had the opportunity to play in his late teens, he rapidly progressed, quickly being snapped up by Neath and from there to the Welsh squad.

Williams went on to win 87 caps and was voted World Rugby Player of the Year in 2008 having scored a total of 60 international tries.

A presentation was also made by Shane to club steward Elfed Jones for his 21 years’ service to the club following his recent retirement.

The club is now looking ahead to the 25th edition of the annual Sion Wyn 7s tournament ahead of next season with the club hopeful the WRU will revert back to a pre-pandemic pyramid.
