JOEL Evans starred with a hat-trick as Brecon Corries closed on the MMP-NL Mid Wales League East title with a 7-1 win at home to Newtown Wanderers.

Corey Evans also netted twice while Craig Evans and Luke Rougley also struck with Tom Roberts netting a consolation for the visitors as the Corries closed the gap at the top to a point from leaders Builth Wells.

However the Brecon club need to win their final game of the season at Llansantffraid next weekend to seal the title.

Meanwhile Ricky Lynes netted twice as Hay St Mary's eased to a 3-0 win at home to Montgomery Town while Matty Tong completed the scoring.

Trewern United completed a Llansantffraid Village Cup upset with a 3-2 win at home to Montgomeryshire League champions Meifod.

The Tigers raced ahead with goals from Warren Roberts and Ryan Gardner before Phil Hughes reduced the arrears for Meifod.

Meifod drew level with Robert Hughes netting early in the second-half only for Luke Francis to net the winner for Trewern on the hour.

Garin Evans starred with a hat-trick as Bont eased to a 4-1 win at home to Corris United in the Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth League.

William Evans also struck for the hosts with the Quarrymen reducing the arrears through Dion Kohler before seeing goalkeeper Michael Blackwell dismissed.
