THE largest crowd in two decades assembled at the Groe as Builth Wells overcame local rivals Brecon in the WRU Plate on Saturday.

Home coach Ben Duggan praised his players after a 20-6 victory in a heated contest which saw Brecon contest most of the match with 13 men.

However Brecon led 6-3 at the break with a Steffan Towns penalty who also converted a try from Rhys Davies as the Bulls established a lead at the start of the second-half.

As Brecon's discipline disintegrated the hosts settled the outcome with a penalty try before Towns added another two penalties to complete the scoring.

Duggan said: "I was delighted by the performance from the players on such an occasion, it was the biggest crowd on the Groe for 20 years with a great atmosphere

"We started well but couldn’t quite get over the line and conceded a few soft penalties but it was very pleasing to score a very well worked and important try in the corner.

"After half time we kept chipping away at the score line through penalties and playing some stylish attacking rugby.

"With the youngsters Ryan Jones and Sion Coyle having standout games, I was pleased with the maturity of the team and how we managed to close the game out to the end, something we had struggled with the week before.

"Myself and Rob Lloyd were very proud of the efforts of all the players and all involved which was a fantastic day for the club, but I’m sure they’re ll be a big reaction from them when we travel to Brecon at the end of the month so the boys will have to step it up another level again."
