More than a dozen cyclists from one of Powys' closure-threatened primary schools rode the 37 miles from Llanbedr to Llandrindod Wells to protest against the plans.

On Saturday, parents and grandparents of school pupils from the village near Crickhowell rode to County Hall to deliver consultation responses opposing the planned closure of the primary school.

They were joined for the first two miles and the last three miles of Saturday's protest ride by pupils.

The bike ride also raised more than £2,000 towards the campaign to save Llanbedr Church in Wales school from closure.

In February, the Independent/Conservative cabinet began the process of closing the school in the Vale of Grwyney near Crickhowell, in a move intended to save the council £101,000 a year.

Due to errors in the documentation, on the actual pupil figures and free space at nearby school the consultation on the closure has been extended.

Cllr William Powell added: “Fantastic effort by Llanbedr school pupils, parents and grandparents on their mammoth bike ride to drop off consultation responses on the cabinet proposals to close their school.

“The Liberal Democrat group is determined to save this excellent rural school.”

A petition has been also set up against the closure proposal and has been signed by 1,812 people.

The consultation period is due to come to an end tomorrow (Wednesday, June 23).

Powys County Council says that the consultation is being held in accordance with the School Organisation Code (2018) and School Standards and Organisation (Wales) Act 2013.

After the consultation, education staff will sift through the responses.

They will then write a report based on the information from the consultation which will then go in front of the cabinet for them to decide whether to continue the closure process or not.

The original aim by the cabinet is to close the school by by the end of August 2022 with pupils transferring to their nearest alternative school.
