Newtown driver admits fatal A483 crash near Welshpool

Lucas Trevor Jones changed his plea at Mold Crown Court earlier today (Tuesday, September 15).

The 19-year-old had initially denied causing the death of John Michael Day by driving dangerously on the A483 at Crowther Hall, near Pool Quay, on October 11, 2025.

He had also denied causing serious injury to Joseph Oosby and Macey Jones in the same incident.

Mr Day, 68, and from Llandrinio, near Llanymynech, had been driving a Mini along the road when Jones' Volkswagen collided with it.

Mr Oosby and Miss Jones were passengers in the Volkswagen.

The opening day of the trial was told how Jones was "a car crash waiting to happen" after a series of dangerous overtaking manoeuvres months earlier.

Separate charges of driving dangerously on the A458 near Welshpool on July 21, 2025, and of perverting the course of justice had also been denied by Jones.

At today's hearing, he changed his plea to guilty in relation to the dangerous driving offence.

No evidence was offered by the Crown Prosecution Service in relation to a charge of perverting the course of justice.

Jones, of Robin Square, Maesyrhandir, Newtown, was given an interim driving disqualification and will return to Mold Crown Court for sentencing on November 27.

Judge Simon Mills requested a pre-sentence report and a medical report ahead of that hearing.

Jones was granted bail.
