Newtown’s annual Food Festival brought food, music and family activities to the town on its first day.
The festival is being held across the Town Hall Grounds and Newtown High Street on Saturday and Sunday, September 5 and 6. Entry is free.
Organisers introduced a High Street Takeover on Saturday, bringing traders, crafters, activities and community groups into the town centre. Visitors were encouraged to explore independent shops, cafés and businesses during the event.
The exhibitor marquee featured dozens of food and drink producers, including pie makers, chocolatiers, bakers, cheese specialists, distillers, vineyards and artisan food suppliers from Mid Wales, Shropshire and beyond.

The Music Lawn is combining live performances with street food, including gourmet coffee, pizzas, dumplings, churros, Turkish cuisine and hog roasts. The Producer Lawn included local makers, charities, community organisations and craft businesses.
Local breweries, cider producers and mobile bars are serving drinks throughout the weekend. On Saturday evening, SMTX, Mascot Moth, Lucky Pierre and Built 4 Comfort performed before headliners Punk Rock Jukebox closed the event with punk rock classics.
Families are making use of the Children’s Village, which offers bushcraft skills, circus workshops, craft sessions and interactive performances. Attractions include the Unbelievable Bureau of Investigations, workshops from Textile Junkies, pasta mosaic making and the return of Emma’s Donkeys. Bushcraft expert Neil Hopkins has led fire lighting, wood carving, leather key ring making, clay modelling and Nordic braiding.
Other activities include a live BBQ demonstration from Cambrian Butchers and Farm Shop, the launch of Beyond Breakout’s interactive digital mission Operation Crumbusters, and apple crumble making with Cultivate.
The Garrison Band Experience has been providing live entertainment, while organisers said pranksters might appear around the town.
Organisers say the festival is designed to celebrate local food, creativity and community spirit while bringing thousands of people into Newtown town centre.
Visitors have been advised to bring camping chairs and stay for the day.
