From Sir Bryn Terfel to Elvis and open-air Shakespeare, Powys prepares for one of its busiest entertainment fortnights of the summer
Music lovers, theatre-goers and festival enthusiasts are being spoilt for choice across Powys over the next two weeks, with dozens of events taking place between August 21 and September 4.
The programme begins on Friday, August 21, when family audiences can enjoy The Groovy UV Show at Pavilion Mid Wales in Llandrindod Wells, while live music fans can head to Brecon where Sicknote Steve performs at The Foundry.
Further entertainment is planned at Hafod-y-Hendre on the Royal Welsh Showground.

The following day, Saturday, August 22, sees The Foundry host Black Sabbath tribute act Children of the Gravy, while the Willow Globe near Rhayader stages an open-air production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Additional live music is scheduled in Newtown and Kerry.
Attention then turns to Machynlleth Festival, which runs from August 23 to August 29. Highlights include Aled ac Eleri on August 24, Côr Meibion Llangwm Male Voice Choir on August 25, Budapest Cafe Orchestra on August 26, Johan Dalene and Jâms Coleman on August 27, Sir Bryn Terfel’s Glyndŵr Award presentation on August 28 and Siân James and the festival finale on August 29.
Llandrindod Wells is simultaneously hosting its annual Victorian Festival, with entertainment including an AGM and Frivolity evening on August 24, Gerald Dickens’ performance of The Signalman and The Murder on August 25, an afternoon tea dance on August 26, A Trip to the Music Hall later that evening, a Gothic-themed tea event and A Pandemonium of Poe on August 27, the Grand Ball on August 28 and an Elvis Night on August 29.
Meanwhile, Presteigne Festival, running from August 27 to August 31, offers a packed classical programme featuring performances including The Soldier’s Tale, A Trio of Horn Trios, Dragon Tales, The Dancers, Ravel String Quartet and the festival finale.
The Bank Holiday weekend is particularly busy. On August 29, Hay-on-Wye’s Globe hosts Hay! We’ve Got Worms!, featuring Howling Bee, Silvertones and Nightporters, while Talgarth Festival brings live music throughout the weekend. The Willow Globe stages The Tempest on August 29 and 30.
The biggest outdoor music event arrives on Sunday, August 30, when The Big Summer Bash takes place at Llandrindod Wells Lake. Acts include Out of Order, Tell Mother, The Jesters, Shop Front Heroes, 40 Miles Apart and Frosty and Meg. Although planned fireworks have been cancelled, organisers say the music programme will go ahead.
The fortnight concludes with Brecon venue The Foundry hosting Zac and The New Men on September 4, rounding off an exceptionally busy period for entertainment across Mid Wales.
