Final orders have been called at The Goat Hotel in Llanfair Caereinion, marking the end of an era after Richard and Alyson Argument spent 41 years behind the bar of the town's popular pub.
The couple, who have been at the heart of community life in the town for more than four decades, were overwhelmed by the support they received as customers old and new gathered to mark the end of an era on Tuesday, August 11.
In a heartfelt message shared after their final trading day, Richard and Alyson thanked everyone who had supported them throughout their time at the popular pub.
They said: "After 41 years at The Goat, we've called last orders for the final time.
"It's impossible to sum up all of the memories, friendships, late nights and early mornings in a post but most importantly, we want to say thank you."
End of an era for Llanfair landmark
The couple paid tribute to the generations of customers who helped make The Goat a central part of life in Llanfair Caereinion.
Over the years, the pub has hosted everything from Christmas celebrations and New Year singalongs to carnivals, quizzes, karaoke nights, school concerts, book clubs, Welsh lessons, and community events.
Richard and Alyson also thanked former and current staff, neighbouring businesses, local suppliers, sports teams, railway volunteers, and generations of Young Farmers members who regularly made The Goat their home from home.
Their message reflected the huge role the pub has played in the social fabric of the town over the past four decades.
Young Farmers among those paying tribute
Among those sharing their appreciation were members of Llanfair Caereinion Young Farmers Club, who presented Richard and Alyson with flowers and a specially written poem to mark the occasion.
Sharing a tribute on social media, the club wrote: "Well the atmosphere in the Goat tonight was truly something special.
"Richard and Alyson, you are so loved by everyone around you and tonight definitely showed that.
"Thank you for everything.
"We appreciate you so much and wish you all the best."
A thank you to the community
In their farewell message, Richard and Alyson thanked everyone who had helped make their years at The Goat so memorable, including fellow pub landlords in Llanfair Caereinion who had supported one another through difficult times and even helped out with emergency supplies when needed.
They also wished the pub's new owners, Sultan, Shakila, Saffraz, and their family, every success for the future.
The couple signed off with one final message before taking what they described as a "much needed holiday."
While the doors of The Goat will remain open under new ownership, for many in Llanfair Caereinion the final last orders called by Richard and Alyson truly marked the end of an era.
