Waterfall Country and Pistyll Rhaeadr make UK list

Two Welsh sites have been named among the top 10 most beautiful in the UK by outdoor experts at GO Outdoors, who compiled a new list of the country’s most impressive falls.

Ranked third is Pistyll Rhaeadr, one of the UK’s largest waterfalls and a location steeped in legend.

Located in the Berwyn Mountains near Oswestry and Shrewsbury, local legend has it that a winged serpent lived in the lake at the top of the falls, and would fly down into the local village to steal children, women or animals before eating them.

Pistyll Rhaeadr is also listed as one of the ‘Seven Wonders of Wales’, and with a car park and tea room at its base, it is easily accessible for visitors of all abilities.

Further south, in eighth place, is Waterfall Country in the Brecon Beacons, known for its dramatic landscape shaped by centuries of flowing water.

The area is famed for the Four Falls Walk, the most popular way to experience the region.

Among the falls, Sgwd Yr Eira stands out, allowing visitors to walk behind a curtain of falling water.

Natalie Wolfenden, author and outdoor enthusiast at GO Outdoors, said: "Waterfalls offer beautiful scenery and an escape into nature, making them a great choice for a summer walk.

"Whether you’re looking for a short woodland stroll or a more challenging hike, there are plenty of impressive waterfalls to discover across the UK."

Ms Wolfenden also urged walkers to prepare properly before setting out.

She said: "Before setting off, it’s important to plan ahead and check that the route you intend to take is suitable for your fitness and experience.

"When heading out, be sure to wear comfortable, sturdy footwear, carry plenty of water and pack waterproof clothing, as conditions can change quickly even during the summer months.

"Taking a little time to prepare will help ensure you can enjoy everything these stunning waterfalls have to offer."

Elsewhere in the UK, High Force in County Durham topped the list, followed by the Falls of Glomach in Ross-shire, Scotland.
