Woman, 36, arrested after fire in Knighton town centre

Dyfed-Powys Police have confirmed that they have arrested a 36-year-old woman after a fire in Knighton this morning (May 21).

The High Street in the town was closed off by officers this morning to allow firefighters to attend a fire believed to be at W.E Price, a family-run clothing shop located on the street.

Police have now confirmed that no one has been injured as a result of the fire and that the woman who was arrested has since been taken to hospital.

A spokesperson for Dyfed-Powys Police said: “Officers are in attendance at High Street, Knighton, this morning to assist with a property fire.

“The road was closed at around 7am and remains closed for the incident to be managed safely. No injuries reported.

“A 36-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of arson and has been taken to hospital to be medically assessed.”

Eyewitnesses reported "smoke billowing from the shop" and, that on further inspection, they “could see the ceiling on fire.”

Another local business owner, Andrea Williams, owner of Border Bites sandwich bar, said: “There’s been a lot of activity in town. All I know is that it was a fire at Price’s. The fire crew have been in here for some food and I’ve just tried to stay open.”

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed multiple crews attended the incident.

Earlier this morning, a spokesperson for the service said: “At 6.28am on Thursday, May 21, the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews from Knighton, Presteigne and Llandrindod Wells Fire Stations were mobilised to an incident at the High Street in Knighton.

“Supported by a crew from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, crews are responding to a property fire.”
