Welshpool town centre street closed after 'massive bang'

Crews rushed to the scene last night, closing The Cross to both pedestrians and traffic while crews dealt with what was described as an "incident".

Crews have now left the scene, but barriers remain outside the Royal Oak, and Church Street is closed off.

The traffic lights at the junction - where Berriew Street, High Street, Severn Street and Church Street converge, are off this morning with teams appearing to be preparing temporary traffic lights in their place.

While Church Street is closed off, the other three roads converging on the street are shut, and traffic coming along Brook Street is being directed up Church Bank.

A power outage map run by SP Energy Networks, which runs the grid in northern Powys, shows that there was a large-scale outage around Welshpool town centre just before 8pm on Tuesday (January 6).

Local people reported hearing a "massive bang" which was "seriously loud".

Videos shared on social media suggest that emergency services are dealing with an "underground electrical fire" near to The Royal Oak Hotel.

"Please avoid the area and find alternative routes for your journey," Dyfed-Powys Police said last night.
