The former Sainsbury’s supermarket in Welshpool has been identified as a site that could be redeveloped.

As part of the analysis undertaken by Powys County Council as part of its Local Development Plan, the former supermarket was identified as a “previously developed land opportunity”.

The site on Brook Street has been empty for three years since its closure in 2021.

The store's departure was considered a serious blow to the town centre at the time, coming directly after other closures on Broad Street.

At the time, Welshpool Town Councillor Phil Pritchard predicted@ "There doesn't seem to be anything anyone can do about these things. It's just the state of the country and the state of the county.

"It is another large unit in the town centre that is probably going to be empty for a very long time."

OTHER NEWS:

Since then, the store has been left empty, with many other brands being rumoured at various times to be interested in the site.

However, with Tesco, Morrisons and Aldi already having stores in the town, and several other major retailers ruling out any interest in moving into Powys it has remained vacant.

As such, it has been identified as one of two sites for potential development along with the site of the now closed Ysgol Ardwyn which was sold at auction last year.

The new owners, Shrewsbury-based property development company Homesmiths, have said they were looking to convert the site into housing.

Company director Adam Smith said: "We are looking to undertake a sympathetic and high-quality conversion of the former classrooms into new homes.

"As a company we specialise in the renovation of historic and listed buildings and we are really looking forward to preserving this special property for future generations.”
