As Welshpool Town Council discussed the idea of pedestrianising the town’s high street, here’s some idea of what that might look like.
Using the image generator at https://dutchcyclinglifestyle.com/ that reimagines views of streets and roads if they were pedestrianised, we've mocked up so images of what Broad Street might look like as a pedestrianised street.
One option shows the street with boxed hedges, creating closed off areas where cafe culture might thrive.
Another, perhaps less realistic, option, suggests cobbles to give the street an historic feel.
And a third, particularly fanciful idea, fills Broad Street with wildflower meadows. Honey made by the bees of Welshpool town centre could be hitting the shops within months.
At a town council meeting on September 4, councillors raised the notion of possibly making the centre of Welshpool a pedestrian-only area and permanently close it to traffic, saying that it had been mentioned by multiple members of the public.
Cllr Phil Pritchard told the meeting: “I’d like to make you aware of one query I had, which came right out of the blue but I couldn’t help thinking about afterwards.
"I was asked why we don’t make the whole of Broad Street pedestrianised and have the traffic go around the town.”
The street is a trunk road maintained by the Welsh Government, but closes for major events such as the annual lights switch-on.
Town mayor Cllr Phil Owen added: “The trouble is that Broad Street is still designated as a trunk road, but I think pedestrianising it could be done and might actually be a good thing.”

Cllr David France said: “I’m glad this was brought this up and agree with what Cllr Owen is saying. I think it would be good to have a space made just for pedestrians without traffic disturbing their day.
“If we wanted to pursue the idea we could petition Welsh Government over it being a trunk road.
"But I think we’d need to consult the public over whether it’d be something they’d want to see. I think it could be something worth exploring.”
