Powys County Council are investigating after a maggot was found in a salad in Poundland in Welshpool.

Huw Davies was horrified after he and his partner discovered a maggot in their Bryans Caesar Salad that they bought in Welshpool earlier this month.

“It was from Poundland in Welshpool. It was bought on August 14, me and my partner just bought it as part of a meal deal,” said Huw.

“We went to eat the Caesar salad, there’s the mayonnaise there’s croutons lettuce all bundled together.

“It wasn’t until the end of eating the meal that my girlfriend saw the maggots and said “what the heck are these?”

“They were literally in the plastic bowl crawling round.”

Huw said that his partner was immediately physically sick and said he is concerned that they could have consumed some as they would have been camouflaged in the mayonnaise.

“I don’t know if maggots can carry disease, it should never ever be in a food product without you knowing it,” added Huw.

Since then, Huw has been dismayed by the response of Poundland to the incident, who gave his partner £15 in vouchers and an apology.

“I was a bit annoyed,” said Huw. “The amount of emails I have sent to Poundland, I have gone on Poundland’s Facebook messenger and had no response.”

Poundland have said that they did not respond to Huw as the complaint was in his partner’s name however Huw has now contacted Powys County Council about the incident, who have confirmed that they have launched an investigation.

“I don’t want other people to go through what we did,” said Huw. “I’m not blaming Poundland but obviously something has gone somewhere along the line with that product.

“Somebody could become ill, that is my main concern really.”

In response to an enquiry from the County Times Poundland confirmed they looking into the incident.

A spokesperson for Poundland said: “Mr Davies' partner was in touch with us about her Caesar salad and our customer service team apologised to her and confirmed at the time we'd be asking the supplier of this branded Bryans salad to investigate.

“We're more than happy to talk again to Mr Davies' partner if she wants to get in touch.

“Clearly salads are a natural product but she can be assured that we've asked the supplier to confirm that all the right processes are in place.

“Once again we apologise for her unexpected find.”
