A community hub in Llanfyllin will be opening a garden as part of its outreach programme that founders have called “the culmination of a decade of work”.
The Cross Keys, a community hub based in Llanfyllin, will be holding a garden party on Saturday, August 31, from 2pm onwards to officially open its newly created community garden.
Directors of the hub, Shan and Darren Mayor, hope the garden will serve as an extension of the work done inside the hub as well as mark a significant step in their 10-year journey to provide support in the area.
Shan, a teacher who founded Llanfyllin Community Church 13 years ago, and Darren, a minister who has been an IMPACT Christian Schools Worker in Montgomeryshire for 24 years, first bought The Cross Keys in 2014.
On the opening of their garden, Shan said: “This wouldn’t be possible without the grants that have helped to fund this mission and loads of volunteers who have helped us keep it running all these years.

“It’s the culmination of 10 years of planning, as our friends and volunteers have helped bring it over the line.
“The garden party is not just an opening, but it’s a celebration of the whole of the Cross Keys, a community space that the garden will serve as an extension of the work we have done on the inside.
“We operate as a house of prayer, a coffee shop for socialising, a space available for community hires. It’s something to share with local people so having all this space is a new and valuable feature for us.”

The garden is currently having the finishing touches carried out, with volunteers arranging and planting things around the space, as well as extra features like a yurt tent as its centrepiece, donated to the Cross keys by the RSPB.
Shan added: “It’s a bit overwhelming to see it all come together. We’ve sore of stood back in amazement as people have come along at every point to help us. It now feels bigger than Darren and myself.
“We’ve been working for 10 years to make this place one of hospitality and welcoming, so it’s been fantastic to see people come along to help because every person who has helped us on this journey really matters.”
