A centuries-old Powys pub could be set for a major overhaul after plans were submitted to demolish part of the building and install a new kitchen and dining area.
The Dolphin Inn in Llanymynech has submitted plans to knock down part of the flat-roofed extension at the back of the pub.
The proposals are with a view to building a new extension allowing it to create restaurant facilities linked to the existing pub.
That plan is part of a separate application, and would mean the pub no longer needs to use a kitchen it describes as "not fit for purpose", and a marquee for diners.
Plans for the demolition were put forward this week, and include the design and access statement from a parallel application which would allow for the new building to be constructed.
"The design proposes a single-storey rear extension to house restaurant facilities with circulation link to connect to the existing pub," the statement reads.
"There is also proposed to be an enlarged single story kitchen extension access off the proposed link way to replace the existing flat roofed provision which is no longer fit for purpose.

"The design has been led by the need to create DDA compliant access into both the new development and the existing dining area of the pub which currently has level changes which prohibit wheelchair access.
"The design introduces a level entrance “courtyard” with some outside seating whereby access is gained to the new restaurant extension. This then leads to seating, a secondary bar, accessible WC and the dining area."
The plans would see a single-storey extension of a similar size to the marquee that is currently being used. A glass-walled 'link' would connect it to the pub, and a rebuilt wall. It has been designed to include oak timbers to match the pub, and local brick styles.
The statement adds: "This popular pub is in great need of modernizing to allow the business to flourish whilst maintaining the traditional elements that attract many patrons.
"The proposed development will ensure the continued success of an establishment that has been in operation for over 500 years whilst being sympathetic to the history of the building."
The Dolphin has gained national renown for its proximity to the English border, which runs just yards from the front door along the route of the A483 through the village. The Bradford Arms is the English pub located also located in Llanymynech.
