A 61-year-old man has been arrested after a woman in her 30s suffered multiple stab wounds.

Police cordoned off Churchill Square in the Gilesgate area of Durham just before 8pm on Thursday.

The woman was take to hospital for treatment but her injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

A spokeswoman for Durham Constabulary said: “Police were called at 7.45pm yesterday (May 2) following reports that a woman was being assaulted in Churchill Square, Gilesgate.

“Officers attended and found a woman in her thirties who had suffered a number of stab wounds.

“She was taken to hospital for treatment, although her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.”

The suspect was arrested at the scene and taken to police custody where he remains.
