A company that has been based in Powys for more than 80 years has been taken over by a Finnish manufacturer.

Dawson Shanahan, which was established in 1943 in Welshpool and employs over 100 people, has now been acquired by Finnish company Luvata.

The company originally started out making parts for anti-lock braking systems on Lancaster bombers during the Second World War.

Since then, the company partnered with “almost every sector of industry, from automotive and motorsports to aviation, power distribution, electronics and medical”.

The company produces and globally distributes “fast, high-quality precision engineered components for a broad range of industries, including leading connector technology to power electric vehicles”.

David Dawson, owner of Dawson Shanahan, said: “I couldn’t be happier to sell the company I built during my working life to Luvata. It’s a perfect fit and we have a similar approach to providing value-added solutions to our customers.

“Luvata is a well-known and global brand that will allow Dawson Shanahan to prosper and grow in the future as it continues to become an integral part of the green revolution.

"We are excited to start working with our new colleagues at Luvata. The current management team of Dawson Shanahan will continue in their duties, with Les Reeves as the managing director.”

Luvata is a “world leader in copper manufacturing and related engineering services” and prides itself on “innovation, lean production and value-added sales”, and claims its vision is to “provide copper solutions which benefit people, society and the earth”.

The company is very large, employing more than 1,400 staff on four continents.

Luvata Group’s President & CEO, Pekka Kleemola, said: “As we state in our strategy, Luvata is looking to grow the business and become the leading provider of copper solutions for the benefit of people, society and the earth.

“E-mobility, general electrification and green transition as well as healthcare are all important growth drivers for us.

"This acquisition is a great example of strategy execution and Dawson Shanahan is a perfect fit to our business portfolio.”
