Work to install anti-terrorism bollards near Chester Racecourse has been completed, meaning major city centre roads have reopened once more.

The works, for the installation of sockets for anti-terrorism bollards on roads around the venue, had led to the closure of Lower Watergate Street, New Crane Street near the racecourse entrance and Nuns Road over the past week, causing major congestion.

But late on Wednesday, May 1, workers cleared the way for traffic to travel once more on all the roads, to the relief of city centre commuters, who had been told the roads were due to be closed until Friday, May 3.

Cheshire West and Chester Council, which is overseeing the roadworks, explained before works took place: "There is no intelligence to suggest that there is a specific threat posed to the Racecourse. However, the vehicle security bollards will prevent a hostile vehicle or accidental vehicle from entering the crowded pedestrian areas."

There is still expected to be more traffic than normal around Grosvenor Road over the next week, as the Pat Collins Funfair opening means the Little Roodee Car Park is closed.

And next week, Nuns Road, Lower Watergate Street and New Crane Street will be closed as Chester Races begins the 2024 season on Wednesday, May 8, for three consecutive days of racing action.

The new bollard system in place is designed to be implemented and removed more efficiently than previous years, which should lead to less disruption on race days.

The council added: "The end result will mean smoother traffic in the city during race events."
